It was sunset when a small shape appeared on the borders of Nain, very near to the edge of the thick forest of Nabooru. A set of little black paws drew their owner slowly, shakily along; the frame they supported was thin and trembled feebly. A pair of pale green eyes stared listlessly ahead from a face worn with weariness.

Draven had not eaten in several days. He had never known hunger before, not like this. First there had been his--

He flinched from the memory.

There had always been a steady stream of milk at first; later, when he'd graduated to solid food, there'd always been a meal to satisfy him before the emptiness in his belly could turn into the gnawing ache it was now.

His legs shook again; he'd fallen down the last time he walked on shaky legs, so this time he laid down with a whimper and waited for the weakness to go away.

He was so hungry. He was so tired.

He'd hoped somebody would come after him - that maybe he'd just left too soon, and... and somebody would find him again and bring him home. He didn't feel like he was going very far; he couldn't be so far away even now that they couldn't find him. He hadn't really looked around much while he was going - he just picked a direction and ran until he was too tired to run, then walked until he was too tired for that.

No one had come looking for Draven. No one had howled for him. He thought for sure they'd at least be upset enough to howl, like he did the first night it became clear that he was alone. Didn't adult wolves howl, too?

Didn't anybody want him anymore?

He whimpered again and drew his forepaws over his face, shaking hard now as he began to cry. His sharp little yips carried on the wind, passing through and around the boughs of Nabooru. He was too tired to care if it was too much noise. Maybe something would hear him and come eat him. At least then he wouldn't be hungry, or tired, or alone anymore.

SPEECH + THOUGHT

It had been a good length of time since Tiriel's last meeting with Theron. The two had had a great time, walking their new borders and exploring the land of Nain. As they had laid their scents along the territory the two had had time to converse, ponder their future as well as their other group members. Despite the original drive they all had shared to start a new and bring up their new pack, little had been done. Their numbers had not increased at all. Nuru had all but disappeared. It was not looking good for Asa. At least they had not had any problems. They had not been visited by any of the neighboring packs, or been troubled by any lingering loners. Things had been relatively quiet.

At least until now.

Tiriel had been watching the small pup for quite some time now. When she had first noticed the unusual scent ahead of her, Tiriel's heart had nearly leaped out of her chest! Finally! Something interesting was gonna happen, give her something to do! Her longer limbs had nearly broke out in a dead run, loud and clumsy like a child. It was not until after a couple bounds that she regained her control, slowed herself down. Not that it would have mattered in the end. The unknown intruder was nothing more than a wee pup, just barely old enough to be separated from his mother.

The more she followed the pup, the more intrigued she became. He looked so small, so... fragile. Was he old enough to be away from his mother? Tiriel did not know how to tell. She had not been around pups much in the faction, they were not common, and those that were around Tiriel had avoided. They were so clumsy and unfortunate. Extra baggage. And yet, rather than write this pup off, Tiriel found herself emerging from the concealing shadows.

"Stop crying," were her first words to the obviously shaken pup. Rather than show sympathy, her eyes were narrowed into slits and her facial features hardened. Her faction showed no restraint when it came to pups, no concern for their fragile minds or often scared states. Pups grew up fast, learned to deal with the problem at hand or face the consequences. Tiriel would not know to treat this pup any differently.

Once she was sure the pup had stopped long enough in his crying to notice her presence, she continued. "Where are your parents? You are alone." She raised her head, looking down her snout at him. The second was not a question, but a statement, and it was laced with distaste. There were few things more disgraceful than killing a faction mate, but abandoning a pup was one of them. It spoke volumes not only of the pup, but of his parents as well.

After a second she called out to him again. "Your name. What is it?" Her mouth hardened into a thin line. She had no idea how he would react to her demanding answers from him.

509 Words + @draven + I picture Tiriel being very intimidating, because of her size and inability to interact with pups very well. Feel free to play that up if you want.

Asa was stagnating.

Theron knew this should not bother him terribly; their numbers were small to begin with, and with a territory to maintain and defend they had no time or resources to spare by sending anyone out into Anikira to search for more loners to bolster their ranks. All they could do for now was endure.

He had faith that they could. They had all been through trials worse than this stillness.

A scent on the wind drew him to the border - the scent of a stranger. Theron trotted quickly to the edge of his territory, unsure whether to be excited at the prospect of a new addition to Asa or concerned that someone may be here to scout Nain out for a potential takeover.

He certainly wasn't prepared for the sight that met him when he arrived. Tiriel had beaten him to the border, and now stood towering over their visitor, demanding answers of him and sparing him no quarter. The visitor himself was no more than a pup, a small, thin scrap of black and silver fur that trembled like a leaf in a hard wind.

Theron pitied the pup, but not so much so that he faulted Tiriel for her less than compassionate approach to the situation. This child could quite possibly be a runaway - and whatever he had run from might be following close behind, bringing danger to Theron's new pack. They needed answers more urgently than this child needed to be coddled.

"Speak up, little one," Theron rumbled, stepping out beside Tiriel and fixing the boy with a look that was stern, but not unkindly so. He was still a child in distress. "Feeling sorry for yourself will accomplish nothing, here. You are on pack grounds. Where have you come from, and why did you leave your home?"
