Life in Sethos was not what Selene had expected.
Namely because she had found herself alone more often than not, and she did not know what to make of it. She’d seen so little of her sister, Nemesis, since they’d emerged on Anikira again and settled in their new pack. And what a pack it was, full of hardened, callous creatures that made Selene seem downright soft in comparison. Weak. It was what she had always hated to be, but what choice did she have, when she lacked the ferocity of the Queen, or the size of the King? No, she was no warrior. She was delicate and dainty and feminine, but she liked to think that perhaps she had her own strengths – in her kindness, her optimism, her courtesies.
And yet none of those things could help her now, as she slunk through the shadows with her pale eyes flashing like jewels, her lithe frame making little noise as she moved towards the cool confines of the caverns that waited ahead. It was where she spent most of her time now, in her seclusion – always waiting, always wondering if her sister would come charging down the path at any moment. Selene knew she could not rely on Nemesis for everything – but hadn’t she always?
Life was so very strange now.
A soft sigh slipped from her silvery muzzle as she moved into the caves, slowing her pace a fraction to better navigate around the stalagmites. The clicking of her claws against stone echoed gently around her as she moved, only halting once she’d found herself in a more secluded area of the tunnel, where she promptly settled against one of the cool walls. Her tail curled around her frame as she sat gently upon her haunches, allowing her ears to flatten against her skull as her head drooped.
She was allowed a moment, a second, of her respite before she heard it – the sound of approaching steps. Her heart leapt with the hope that it would be Nemesis, but her treacherous brain knew it was not so, for the steps were far too heavy. Lifting her head once more, doe-eyes peered through the dimness around her as the steps grew closer, until at last she called in her high, clear voice, ”Hello?” Her tones echoed around her before quieting, tapering off into silence as she tucked her tail more tightly around herself, waiting.
