SPEECH. TEXT. THOUGHT.
As he lay with his stomach against the frozen ground, Rikez felt the cold seeping past the protection of his outer pelt. His skin bubbled with goosebumps as he rested his head on his front paws and watched the strange creatures hobbling in the distance. Penguins. He could remember the first time he had seen the strange, flightless birds. The Eastern Timber male had been with Hannibal and his African Dog companion, and they had tried to grab one as a snack. If it hadn’t been for the thin ice and Rikez’s own poor footing, they would have had one. Round and stupid, with chattering throats and bleating cries, the creatures seemed like they were just asking to be hunted. Rikez watched as they huddled and moved together, hobbling on their strange, short legs. Occasionally one would break away from the group, flapping its useless wings and stretching its neck before returning to the others.
Despite the easy meal just within reach, Rikez was far from hungry. Grief had been gnawing at his belly, replacing hunger and driving him to patrol the territory instead of hunt. Huginn was avoiding the cold of the ground by riding the wind currents above the dark brute’s head. Ever since this dark mood had settled over Rikez and she had returned to him in the mountains, the raven had refused to leave him for very long. It was comforting, knowing she was just within reach.
For the first time since joining Aludri, the ebony brute felt as if his future was uncertain. He needed a purpose, a reason to get up and do something. As a scout for Arche, there had been few tasks to complete, and even fewer missions outside Aludri’s borders. The Eastern Timber wolf needed a purpose to get him on his feet and moving in the right direction. Right now, however, all he could do was sigh and watch the stupid birds shuffle across the ice.
