It had been a long, arduous climb, but it had surely been worth it for what lay before Selene’s eyes now.
She’d spent the better part of the morning before dawn shimmying her way up the rocks, her light footsteps helping to navigate the rocky terrain. There had been periods where she’d needed to rest, curling her body into the crags to catch her breath before continuing again, determined to reach the top. And at last she had, just as the sun had begun to climb over the horizon. The view now was nothing short of spectacular.
Standing at the edge of the terrain, the sound of the waves crashing against the stone below coupled with the plethora of colors splashed across the horizon as the sun rose made her feel more relaxed than she had in some time. A serene smile touched her muzzle as she gently lowered her rump to the ground, tail curling around her delicate paws as the breeze ruffled her silvery fur. The scent of brine was familiar and comforting, and for a moment, she wished that Nemesis was here to partake in this moment with her.
Things in Sethos had been…interesting, to put it quite mildly. Ever since Queen Far had summoned her to inform her that she would be a member of Krol’s harem, Selene had been…not herself. She’d already been worried that she would be found useless and slaughtered for it, but to know that the only thing keeping her alive would be her ability to carry and whelp pups for Sethos rankled her to her core. And Krol…he was no gentle brute by any means, nothing like the mate Selene used to dream that she would have. What if the news of having to be saddled with her infuriated him so deeply that he killed her, as he had with his previous mate?
Would death be so very terrible, though? Would it not be a release? Almost immediately, she felt guilty for thinking it. Selene had always prided herself on being adaptable, on her determination to survive and thrive no matter the circumstances. To give in to defeat now…no. She couldn’t. A little sigh slipped from her muzzle as she continued to trace the sun’s path, watching it climb higher and higher in the sky. Perhaps one day, her world would set itself right again.
