[attr="class","pltxt"] What was she doing?
It was bold to come this close to Kairos territory, and she certainly wasn’t bold. She couldn’t even remember the last time she let herself properly think about what her life had been like there, among those gargantuan beasts, with him, but her body recalled what she wouldn’t allow her brain to. There was no other explanation for why her paws took her all this way. She couldn’t lie to herself. She was never any good at it.
She could swim there right now if she dared. The snow was too thick, too blinding, for her to make out the shape of Ina’mos across the water, but she craned her neck anyway, squinted against the cold wind anyway, as if she’d do something other than duck her head in fear if she actually caught a glimpse of the island. She didn’t see anything, naturally, and with a sigh she turned away from the water. It was for the best.
The freezing temperatures were beginning to seep up and into her paws, and she could feel a dull ache in her tired bones because of it. She went this way when she abandoned Kairos, through North Igneir and towards her freedom, and she distinctly remembered passing by a cavern near the water. Anything beat another night out in the open, burying herself in the snow to avoid prying eyes, but dealing with the consequence of chattering teeth and shivering limbs. More than once she startled awake with icicles on her eyelids. More than once she was surprised to be alive.
But she was a good hunter, and she knew a thing or two about medicine. It helped to remind herself of her talents from time to time. Sure, she didn’t do amazingly on her own, but what wolf did in these harsh weather conditions? She had managed on her own so far, and that had to count for something. Later that night, when she managed to track down and kill a white rabbit – slim, barely with any meat on its bones, but a meal just the same – she contended with herself that it did count for something, after all. She was quick to track down the cavern with her prize, not wanting to be caught out in the open on unclaimed land by another hungry vagabond with less luck. Aphrodite wasn’t brave, and she wouldn’t put up a fight for what she earned. Risking injury was foolish anytime of the year, but especially in winter, and she’d sooner go hungry through the night than scavenge for herbs beneath the snow while limping and colouring her surroundings red. Luckily, she reached the cavern unscathed, ducking inside without hesitation and shaking the snow from her pelt. Normally she would’ve scouted the area for a scent before entering, but she was cold, hungry, and sore from a day’s travel, so the thought completely slipped her mind. She sucked in a sharp breath so suddenly that the boney rabbit fell from her jaws, landing with a smack on the chilly cavern floor.
