Spring was such a wonderful time. It was still cool in Shyia, and not all of the snow had melted, but color had begun to show alongside the white and everything was teeming with life. In the dense tree coverage, there wasn’t much direct sunlight to warm his fur, and there was still quite a lot of snow on the ground, covered in the shade provided by the leaves that were growing back on the trees, but it was warmer than it had been lately, and Asher was grateful for that. He was more than ready to be done with the long cold nights.
At least the winter had not been as lonely as he assumed it would have been upon his return. It had been a pleasant surprise to return and have a friend around. Asher hadn’t known just how in need of a friend he had been, and honestly still was. And he liked Andromeda; their friendship was easy, natural. She was much more full of spunk than he was, and he liked her spirit. It balanced out his melancholy. Not that Andromeda was never melancholy about having left her family, but she seemed overall rather happy to Asher.
It was Andromeda he was out hiding from on this sunny afternoon. He heard her voice through the dense undergrowth of his hiding place chime out, “Ready or not!” The second part was less clear, and Asher wondered if she had possibly headed off in the wrong direction. Certainly she would quickly notice neither his tracks nor his scent were in that direction, though he had done the best he could to obscure them and run trails over his own trails to confuse her. It was no fun otherwise.
His deep blue eyes peered out from between the newly grown leaves, and he hoped they wouldn’t give him away as he waited, his heart pounding. With this much adrenaline coursing through him, he could hardly have noticed the cold if he had tried.
