History: Beau was born into a pack that treated him like a god – at least, so it seemed.
Antoinette gave birth to three pups in the depth of winter: Bella, Beau, and Mabelle. They were healthy and beautiful, just as they were expected to be. It was just as well that they met all the expectations of their father, Louis, otherwise they would have been abandoned to die. The brute was as austere as he was debonair, and there was nothing in the world that mattered to him more than good breeding and a handsome lineage. He had chosen his mate based not only on her own physicality, but on the look and disposition of her parents, as well as her submissive nature. She was also, like him, a purebred Mackenzie Valley wolf.
Louis and Antoinette were the figureheads of Royaume, a pack founded on discipline, attractiveness, and tradition, nestled in the centre of Anikira. Louis’ paternal line had inherited the pack as far back as their cultural memory went, and few had challenged this lineage. The kingdom believed in the divine right of kings, which stated that monarchs were given their power by God.
In some ways, Beau’s childhood was what many would consider idyllic. As the son of the monarch, Beau was a deity incarnate and the next in line for the throne. Everything that could be given to him was given to him. The food he ate was caught by hunters, the wounds inflicted by his father were treated by the most talented of healers, and the jesters of the pack provided all of his entertainment. While he received a good education from the pack’s oldest and wisest, they were not expected to do anything with that knowledge. The pups were expected to do very little other than look beautiful and obey their father.
That expectation, however, was a more difficult one to meet than one might expect. Beau’s father was obsessive and fanatical. One foot out of line meant that Beau and his sisters would be beaten, starved, or emotionally abused. There was an unspoken rule that they were to talk to nobody about this, that it would bring embarrassment to their father and mother. The pack knew, of course, but it was impolite to talk about. As such, much of the power Beau though he wielded over them was in fact a desire to have as little interaction with the young prince as possible. They felt a mix of revulsion, pity, and fear toward the pup and his father, and it was better to let sleeping dogs lie.
Beau has convinced himself of his father’s lie: that his childhood was perfect. Antoinette encouraged this lie, too afraid of their father to suggest otherwise. She was a weak and ineffectual creature, one that Beau inherited much of his feebleness from. They were all puppets in their father’s grand design, players on his stage, and Beau learnt very soon how to play his role well enough that he would not be punished.
For a year, Beau resided in Royaume. He had no intention of leaving, but fate had other ideas. One night, Beau found himself caught in a snowstorm at the edge of his father’s territory, the winter being deeper and more terrible than he knew how to cope with. While attempting to traverse a river to return to the dens, Beau was swept away and assumed dead by his pack. The boy came to on a river bank further north than he had ever been. Alone and useless in the wild, Beau vowed to return to his pack as soon as possible, though his ineptitude and his inability to function without his father telling him what to do will make this vow far harder to fulfil than he imagined.
Personality: There was very little in Beau’s upbringing that prepared him for the wide world, and as a result, he often comes across as relatively out of touch. Beau is a product of his childhood as much as everyone else, and his was not the most conventional childhood to be had. The boy is maladjusted to say the least and had developed coping mechanisms that may not be well-received by others. Having had little interaction with those outside of his family and being not entirely sure how to interact with anyone else, Beau comes across as incredibly rude. It is difficult for him to empathise with others and as a result his manners are sorely lacking.
Having been taught that his appearance is of the utmost importance, Beau is incredibly vain and self-aggrandising, believing himself to be a cut above the rest. It makes him fairly unpleasant to be around at the best of times. Whenever his precious self-image is threatened, Beau can become spiteful and vindictive, usually through words as he has little fighting prowess to speak of. Despite this outward display of boldness, Beau is a cowardly wolf when it gets down to it. Having never had an opportunity to be courageous, it will take a while for him to realise that his actions have consequences and he cannot get away with everything. When he does realise this, Beau will not be quite so outspoken.
Beau comes across as incredibly spoilt and lazy, a brat in many ways. In a superficial way, he was spoilt, but if anyone knew the full story of his childhood, they might think twice about his strange and foolish ways. Although deeply unpleasant, much of this is a manifestation of Beau’s inner demons. Despite his aloof and haughty nature, Beau can become submissive and malleable when his PTSD is triggered and he regresses back to a childlike state.
