She welcomed the darkness that encased her, almost as if it had been an old friend or a family member giving her a welcoming hug. Family. Something that the young she wolf had not known in some time. She had grown used to wandering on her own, encountering wolves and other canids here and there, but never had a constant companion that would help her ease her mind. A mind that still held the horror scene of watching her own mother take her final breaths. The scene was burning into her mind’s eye, making the dark she wolf to cry out in pain and horror, wishing to will it away when a sound echoed softly in her ears.
It had been her own cry that sounded, bringing just enough consciousness to her body that she could hear the sounds of water behind her and birds above. Blinking over and over again, the wolf many would grow to know as Nadia lifted her head to look around. When she realized she was on rocks instead of something solid and what should have been foreign, she raised her shaking body so that she would not be laying on her side. Now able to look around a little better with drowsy eyes, Nadia could not see any signs of confinement aside from the shore lines that lay behind her. Almost as if to tell her that the past is gone and to be washed away with the waves that brushed against the rocks.
She didn’t dare to try and stand just yet, but rather continued to lay there allowing grey eyes to take in the land around her. The rocks did not jab into her body the way she would have thought they would have, instead they seemed to have molded around her drying, ragged from. A frame that should have been filled out and ready to bounce back from anything that was thrown at it. Instead, it was slightly unkept and hung on her body like a leaf awaiting its turn to from a tree in the middle of the Autumn season. Her grey eyes were starting to gain a little life back in them the more she looked around as it started to kick into her mind that she could return to what she loved. Roam. Hunt. Run. Jump. The simple pleasures of being a wolf finally returned.
With those thoughts, she heaved herself to her paws, her legs shaking as the darkness slowly crept away from her body. With every step away from the shoreline she took, her steps started to go from shaky and unsteady, her paws and tail dragging, to being able to walk a straight line without staggering. Her paws slowly stopped dragging as she was able to pick them up properly and lay them against the ground with growing ease. Her tail started to gather a small curl in happiness as she started to walk along the shore line from a safe distance. Every now and then, she would allow her eyes to stray back towards the waters, amused at how the waves seemed to be endless as they rolled over each other. With a deep breath, Nadia lowered her rump back into the rocks, keeping her back toward the land away from her as she settled her eyes on the water.
She was sure that she could settle in fairly easily here, where ever here was. But it would take some time. She just wasn’t sure if there were others left here. She could smell them on the wind alongside wild game that she had not been able to enjoy for some time, but most of the scents from fellow wolves seemed to be faint on the wind that carried the growing life of spring and the cool hint of the water.
What is to become of me now? She thought to herself as she turned her skull to throw another glance around where she sat, hoping to find something that would give her some sort of an answer. Even when she knew that she would never find it without finding another soul to speak with or to try and get them to understand since she hardly used any words since that day. With one glance back out at the endless water, she then stood and started walking again. To where, she didn’t know. She just had to keep moving to finish getting rid of the darkness that still lingered in her body.
