As the days went by Calli had been more and more insistent on leaving the den to explore the island of Miera. Sometimes she would go with her sister, sometimes her mother would join her and they would have a quick lesson on fishing… an activity that as much as it repulsed the young pup to think about having to kill the scaly creatures she knew it was necessary for her to survive now that her mother was giving them less and less milk. The ivory pelted female had even told her not too long ago that soon enough they would be entirely dependent upon hunting for their own meals rather than her giving them milk, or bringing them their fish as she had done when she first started letting them nurse less. Calliope supposed it was the way of the world, the young would grow and become less and less dependent on their parents, and yet the young pup could not imagine living life on her own… sure she would forever be with her mother here, but what of her father? Did she not have one? From her understanding, what little it may be as far as the specifics went, there must be both a mother and a father to produce young.
Thoughts of her father began to swirl through her brain as she walked along, absentmindedly watching as her small, though still much too big and clumsy for her, paws sank slightly into the wet moss beneath her with every step that she took. Was her father even in this pack? She had never thought to ask her mother about him… for a while she had assumed that the older male that she saw her mother speaking with from time to time was her father. Yet, after seeing how her mother acted around him the puppy decided this was not how she would be with their father… and aside from their dark coats, there had been nothing in the friendly old brute to suggest he could have sired them. No, today she wondered who could possibly be her father… to a point it didn’t matter, but she found that now that her thoughts had drifted there, she wanted to know if only for the sake of knowing. Was he not here, was it because he didn’t want them? What if that was it… what if he didn’t want pups of his own and he left their mother? The idea made the young pup’s ears drop in disappointment… no, it couldn’t be that.
Calliope had slowed to a complete stop by now with all the thoughts whirling in her mind. She sat back on her haunches and looked upwards, watching as the grey clouds and mist that always seemed to loom over Miera gently rolled past. She let out a deep sigh, the green eyed pup wasn’t even sure why she was looking up at the skies… as if they would have answers. Her ears perked up at the idea, the skies themselves would not have answers… but maybe the Gods would! She had heard so many stories about them from her mother as well as Valdis! Surely if anyone… they would have the answers for her. Calliope closed her eyes for a moment, silently praying to the Gods and seeking answers to her questions… and in the back of her mind, she hoped that somewhere, her father was wondering about them too.
