Winter had returned, and along with it her heat. Though Mara was a formidable fighter with plenty of experience, she did not have size on her side and thought it best to remain close to Merak, Masyn, and Tanha during her heat cycle. The other members of Ravenis would prevent her from ending up with an unwanted litter, though she was not certain what Merak's plans were for their future. Still, she had no need to produce another litter so soon, especially since she was certain Masyn and Lisanna at the very least would be providing for the future of the pack. Lisanna had given birth to a mixed litter the previous year as a result of what she claimed was a rape, and Masyn had been furious. It was only because of Mara that he did not kill every single wolf-blood pup in their litter. However, her words seemed to have been in vain, for the two pups that had survived were nowhere to be seen as of late.
They had settled far enough south that there was no snow that fell from the skies to accompany the slightly cool breeze that ruffled through her fur, and the pale female sighed heavily as her blue eyes scanned the landscape around her. Her last litter was full grown by now, but not quite old enough yet to produce offspring as well. Caelum had been wandering outside of South Igneir, and though he had been sticking close, she could not help but wonder if he was causing trouble for the pack. He better have the guts and skill to back himself up, because though she had changed a bit over the past year or so, she still had very little patience for those that made trouble for her and her pack. But it was not her son that she sought out that morning. It was one of her daughters, whichever was still present and willing to learn from her.
She needed a distraction, the pack needed food, and the pups needed to learn how to hunt properly. She had spent the early hours of the morning tracking a small herd that had moved south from the northern territories for the winter months, and she was pleased to find that several of the herd had grown sick or injured during their travels. But instead of attacking the deer outright herself, she tracked their position and went out in search of one of her daughters. She had seen Caelum practicing his hunting skills lately, and he was improving even though he could use a lesson or two. But her daughters would need to be taught how to take advantage of weakness, especially since Mara knew first hand how often females were taken advantage of and looked down on in their world. Her paws carried her slowly along the edge of the Savannah, her eyes searching and jaws remaining shut as she kept quiet to avoid frightening off any prey she might come across along the way.
