The past several weeks had flown by much faster that she preferred. Lorelai's time with her pups and no one else but their father was quickly coming to an end. They had grown quickly, sprouting up until she was certain they would outgrow her once they were adults. Two perfect creatures, a male and a female, both unique and yet somehow carrying their history from their parents and ancestors. Nero was heavier than his sister, while Larka had grown like a weed and stood taller now that the inexperienced mother would have expected. She sighed softly, pushing herself to her paws and stretching as her pups laid curled up in balls against one another beside her. They would wake soon, and then they would wish to follow her out of the caves as they always wanted to. But today was different, today she would allow them to do just that.
Her good eye roamed the shadows of the cavern, searching for the form of their dark father, the one that had truly given them life and protected it just as fiercely. He would need to be present for their outing, for even if Lorelai took them into the sun, she knew she could not properly protect them. But thankfully her mother had officially claimed the territory for Ravenis, so their likelihood of encountering dangers outside of the pack was slim to none. Still, as this was her first litter and she had no idea what she was doing, Lorelai was determined not to take any chances. When her eyes wandered to the light that poured in the entrance of the caverns she took a deep breath, exhaling slowly to calm her racing heart. Would they be safe out there? What if she could not keep them both in her sights? What would she do if a threat approached them that she could not fight off or distract from their still small forms?
The questions raced through her mind, and she came to know a new kind of anxiety. So far her life had been chosen for her, her path laid out clearly. But now she had a responsibility to others that required her to make choices and to protect others. How could she do that? Was she even capable? She whined softly, the fear and uncertainty gripping at her as she desperately searched for any sign of Nefarian once more. She needed him to tell her everything would be okay. She needed him to protect her and their pups against anything and everything that might come at them in the outside world. She just needed him.
(Nefarian, Larka, Nero - and others of Ravenis if they wish to join in!)
