The little snow hare was obviously from this year, judging by its small form as it hopped along the small shrubbery that just barely hid the small creature with what little snow lay on its boughs. It came to a stop to nibble at a little foliage when the large ivory pup felt that he had a clear shot. Osiris was low to the ground, the pale coloring of his pelt matching the snow around him almost perfectly… and the poor, naive hare oblivious to the fact that it was being watched. When it hopped a little closer though, it seemed to notice something strange about the mound of snow a few yards away… but by then it was too late. The blue-eyed young male sprang toward the small hare and the poor creature tried to run just a little too late. Osiris scooped it up by its midsection and despite it struggling to get away in his jaws, he was able to position it so he clenched his jaws together where one side of his mouth crushed its neck and the other snapped his spine right behind the shoulder blade.
The coppery taste of blood filled the young wolf’s mouth and he grinned with satisfaction at what he had done. It had been the easiest of his hunts, and to think he had been worried about being able to successfully catch something entirely on his own! His mother would be so proud. Osiris carried the lifeless hare toward a nearby tree and lay just underneath one of the lowest hanging branches, ready to dig in to his meal when an interesting new scent reached him. He paused and looked around, his fur bristling… the smell was not one he had encountered, it wasn’t even canine to him… but the more he scanned the area the more he convinced himself he was imagining things. The young brute laid down and started tearing into the small carcass between his claws when he heard a sound he knew he wasn’t imagining… a light growl, but it was coming from above? Osiris stood and pulled the carcass underneath him as he tilted his head back and looked up, and found himself mere feet away from a snow leopard.
“Hey, what are you doing up there?” he called up to the feline. It didn’t look full grown, it actually looked like it was still pretty young like himself. The creature tilted its head at him but made no move to do anything else. “Are you stuck?” Osiris called up again. The creature just slowly blinked at him… and then he heard the growl again, but he realized the other predator was not purposely making the sound as its ears flattened and it tried to back further from him and then he looked down at his meal, “Oh, you’re hungry…” he said softly and mostly to himself. He looked up at the white and grey creature once more and stepped back a little so his kill was exposed, and the small feline’s head tilted further in question.
“If you come down here, I’ll share.” he called up to the feline, wondering if it could understand him. When it made no move again he reached down and took another quick bite before picking it up and gesturing it toward the clouded leopard above him and then setting it down again and taking a few steps back. The feline seemed to understand now as it jumped down to the branch closest to the ground and looked questioningly at the young male again, who only motioned toward the carcass once more and sat back on his haunches. The small feline hopped down to the ground, picked up the carcass and then jumped back to the branch it had just been on to finish off the meal Osiris had caught. Once she was finished, a low, content purr could be heard emitting from her as she licked her muzzle and paws clean before jumping back down to the ground. “Feel better?” Osiris asked the other creature. She responded by slowly, cautiously closing the distance between them and then rubbing herself along the small canine’s side. Osiris smiled and rubbed his head against hers as she came back to rub against his chin.
“I don’t know how much you understand… but,” he paused as she sat down across from him, head tilted and yellow eyes trained on his facade, he raised one of his fore paws and brought it to his chest, “Osiris. My name is Osiris.” he said a bit slowly. The leopard slow-blinked at him once more and then slowly and awkwardly tried to repeat his name. After a couple attempts and Osiris repeating his name she managed to rumble out an awkward “Osiris” followed by lifting her own paw to her chest as he had done and saying “Kia.” Osiris smiled at her, “Well Kia… I don’t know if you have a home or not, but you can come back to mine! I’m sure mom won’t mind.” he said with a small smile and started walking back down the mountainside. When she didn’t immediately follow though he turned to look and saw a dejected looking feline and he realized she didn’t understand him. He stopped and watched her head perk up a little. “Come with me.” he called back to her and motioned her forward with his head. A smile seemed to spread across her small, velvet lips as she caught up with him and the pair started down the mountainside together.
